November 2022

With Remembrance Day in November, I thought to include this photo from the collection during World War 1. This is a very young man resplendent in his new uniform, his cap having the silver emblem of the Cambridgeshire Regiment.  Most of the men who enlisted in the army from Willingham would have been in this regiment. Presumably his parents wanted this photo, hoping it would not be his last. The apprehension on his face says much. Sadly, he would soon be in the thick of it as the regiment fought in the battles of Somme and Passchendaele where casualties were high. Unless someone can tell us, we don’t know his name but, if he did survive, he would have returned much changed – a man not a boy.
