We hear about the need for more money for the NHS but how did it work before the NHS existed? The local doctor would charge according to what he felt you could afford. But hospital was another matter. Each year the village would have a parade day called “Hospital Sunday” to raise money that would then be put “on account” with Addenbrookes to cover the cost of villagers who needed treatment. Of course, in those days there were much fewer treatments available. Anyway, here is a float full of kids raising money, probably about 1930. The sail says “LESS TALK MORE SHOVE” and the side says “DOCTORS GIVE THEIR TIME. GIVE YOUR COPPERS”.
