Parades were a big part of village life in past times and all the children (and often adults) would dress up for the occasion. Here we see two such specimens. Jennifer Gorner (nee Smith), who has since passed away, provided this information about the occasion: “It shows the then 9 year old Jennifer Smith and the 5 year old Janet Ambrose on Coronation Day, 3 June 1953. Jennifer is dressed as a Lavender Girl. Her dress, which I think was crepe paper dyed lavender, suffered in the heavy rain of that day, the dye running and staining clothing underneath”. It was likely a wonderful day but, of course, children always remember best what went wrong!
