This ramshackle, mysterious thatched building was on the corner of Long Lane and Church St. You can just see the big black barn behind it at top right. The photo is undated but probably around 1930s. The building looks old and dilapidated but has signs all over the front, the most obvious being “Lyons Tea”. Was this just paid advertising or was it a shop? We don’t know. If you look today you will see that the house on the left was extended out. Then a small house was built on the site and then this was also extended and a high roof added. All in the space of 100 years!
Postscript: The owner of the house shown contacted us to say that he does not beleive the building shown is, in fact, his house on the corner of Long Lane. This, therefore, places the actual location of the thatched building as a mystery.
