With the recent disruption in Berrycroft for utilities, I thought it would be interesting to look back to when the main drains were first installed. This picture, in 1965, is taken where Rumbles fish and chip shop now stands and shows the previous shop with its proprietor, Mr. Bester. As can be seen, there is a massive trench made for the new drainage system. Prior to this people had to dispose of their waste in cesspits or as best they could. It was a massive construction project affecting every part of the village and compounded on Berrycroft by an underground stream which had to be pumped out constantly while digging. The huge pump is visible in the photo.
