The person who took this photograph wrote “The Retreat” on the back. Perhaps it was a place in the country for a middle class family from town – perhaps this is them in the front garden. Dad is wearing a terrific straw boater and sporting an impressive beard while the two daughters stand by the front door. This house still stands in the village although, as a result of recent good quality extension you would be hard pressed to spot it. It is on the road leaving the village towards Rampton just before the sharp bend. There is another photograph in the collection taken from the upstairs front window. All that can be seen are fields and a windmill in the distance!
