October 2011

After last month’s photo by the High St. crossroads, our “usual correspondent” informed me that there used to be a pond near the junction. He said: “I wonder how many residents realise that the open space between the Black Bull and the facing houses on Berrycroft (now occupied by trees and a lawn fronting a bungalow) was one of the four village Ponds that existed in my youth. It was known as Parson’s Pond. There was also Green Pond and one near the then entrance to the recreation ground referred to as Lode Pond being adjacent to but not connected to the Lode. The only remaining example now is Long Pond.” This month’s photo is of long pond in the 1960s looking much less cluttered than now.
