This is a very early photo of what is, today, the Green. The photo is probably about 1900 and before the arrival of gas to the village. When gas arrived in 1920s the cottages were demolished a new gas showroom was built. Obviously, the Gas Company was not going to sell much gas if no-one had any gas appliances! Today the gas showroom has become the library. The Vine Inn on the right was the largest Inn and the most up-market place to stay for visitors. The village pond, in the foreground was really just a big puddle that came and went according to the weather. Evidently this had been a dry period as there is no sign of any water!
