December 2025

A rainy day around 1980 and we are at the top of the High St. where the traffic lights are now. Billy Raven stands outside his shop greeting potential customers. The awning says “Fruit and Veg” but you could pretty much anything inside. The signs say “Best Potatoes £2.50” – presumably for a 25lb (12kg) sack – and “Cornish new potatoes 25p / lb”. Bags of coal line up on the street. Traffic lights were not installed until the mid 1990’s before which the morning rush hour was interesting! The photo was taken by a local resident, Alan Neale, who was a BBC photographer and was contributed by Rachael Castleton.
