Here is a photo of the High St. in about 1910. The only house you are likely to recognize is the building on the left which is now “The Bank” pub – and was, of course, an actual bank for most of its life. The notable thing about this photo is how little remains. The big houses with chimneys are still there but everything else has been replaced. The large thatched house was replace by the shops where the post office is today. You will see that there are no pavements and the road surface is very rough. It is also liberally covered with the evidence of horses!
