If you have ever wondered why the little road that runs alongside the Lode at the east side of the rec is called “Pound Lane” then here is the answer. This was actually the site of the village animal pound, seen here around 1895. Farm animals were everywhere and from time to time would escape and run free. If you found a stray and didn’t know the owner you could take it to the pound. The owner, on missing the animal could look for it there and pay a fee to retrieve it. Probably the pound keeper lived in this cottage and perhaps that’s him leaning on the fence..
