This is one of the oldest photographs in the collection, taken in the 1890s. It shows village life with two women chatting (one holding a well wrapped baby) and children gathered – probably playing a game on the ground. One woman is carrying buckets probably after getting water from the village well on the Green. Do we know where this is? Well, there is a clue on the gatepost which is capped with a decorative stone. These were (and still are) on the wall to the Baptist Tabernacle. So these cottages are on the corner of George St and Love’s Lane.
