South, Centre Wall of Nave
|
On the wall opposite to Saint George is a mixture
of mainly 17th century paintings. On the 1eft is the faint outline of an
Apostle of unusual appearance. His face has a resemblance to King Edward
VII, with a pointed beard and a Stalin-like moustache, wearing a stiff
collar, tie and buttoned cloak, and holding a staff. Not much evidence
of sackcloth and ashes here! |
 |
| High up, further to the right is a very striking figure
indeed in red. A very well endowed young woman is looking down to her
right, wearing a dress of richly patterned brocade, with a plunging
neckline, and covered with a veil. She is holding a chalice high in her
right hand, and a tall cross in her left. She represents Faith, part of
a sequence of paintings which portray Faith, Hops and Charity, and were
painted in the early 17th Century. |
 |
| If you look carefully you can see the 'V' neck line at the
top of the veil - although it has to be said that it is a very thin
veil! |
