Cross over to the wall opposite the organ, and look
up at the paintings surrounding the organ pipes. Here are those five
layers again. They have not been conserved and the paintings are not so
clear
But there are the stencilled red rosettes of the 1st layer
again.
Much fainter are 2 Shields from the 2nd layer, one
of which contains the arms of the Bishop of Ely of 1290.
And a very faint outline of another painting of the
Virgin Mary series, – ’The Annunciation’. It is from the 3rd layer.
Now, can you see a large arm and hand holding an
open book? This a later painting of an Apostle, part of a series of 9
Apostles from the 4th layer.
Lastly, an English text. Being in the 10th spandrel, this is
of course the 10th of’ The Ten Commandments, which forms the 5th layer.
